Preview of Mother

The new royal looked maybe twenty or twenty-two, but we knew looks were deceiving to those with unlimited rejuvenation access. The door wound up, and all three of the ones we had been escorting fell to the ground and prostrated themselves in front of the approaching one.

She had the longest and most snake-like hair of any of the royals I had seen. They hung down to her knees and were over an inch thick around. Some were curled on top of her head, others rested on her shoulders, and some draped down her front or her back. All of them turned their eyeless heads, and all were pointing directly at me.

Anderson managed to get some words out of his mouth, “The power….” And then he almost fell and only stayed standing by, grabbing the door frame.

I said, “Please, do not do any mind games. My ship has instructions to suppress you if you do anything.”

Luna said, “It appears that she is suppressing it; that is just the leakage.”

“The new Meduala said, “Hello, you must be the Keith Robinson I have heard so much about. Please excuse the leakage. I am just not used to suppressing it. Oh my, it doesn't seem to affect you at all.”

I said, “Who are you?”

“A name? I haven't used a name in a long time, a very long time.” She leaned in and whispered to my mind, “You may call me Mineta.”

Luna asked, “Is she just talking to you or attempting to control you?”

“I think she is just talking.”

Someone came up with a metal helmet, and Anderson put it on. “Thanks, that helps a lot.”

I said, “So M..”

“Please don't say it out loud; these others are unworthy to hear it.”

I said, “So, what brings you to my ship?”

“She said, “These unworthy ones, you tried to explain why what their ancestors did was wrong, but they failed to grasp it. I think that they understand now.”

I looked down to see blood leaking from where Froha Dill had bitten either his tongue or maybe his cheek. All three lay collapsed on the ground.

“If they are unconscious, how will they return to the shuttle?”

All three lifted off the ground, and they drifted into the shuttle, where I heard them being loudly dropped in the ground in the shuttle.”

“I will have them explain the errors of their ways later after they return to my ship.”

She walked up to me and said, “May I?”

Not exactly sure what she wanted, I automatically replied, “Okay.”

She then reached out, plucked a few stray hairs off my head, and plopped them into her mouth.

After chewing them for a bit, she said, “A pity you are not quite ready yet. What little Domonis has started is brewing so very nicely. I just had to see this wonder.”

I said, “I don't understand. Are you…”

“Shh, don't say anything. I can’t read you at all. This is so wonderful. I can read them all, even the ones with the silly helmets. I can still read them, even your mate, Marnia-12, with the numbers for a last name.
