18. Zent.

As they were driven away, Pawl raised an eyebrow in the direction of his colleagues to receive nods back. He had sensed that Adzly’s daughter was not overly happy at her role of nursemaid and his team’s responses confirmed that they agreed.

The journey to their quarters was shorter than the trip to the administrative centre and Uzbol, lasting only half an hour before they turned into a small development of buildings and stopped in front of one particular residence.

“Captain, this house is one that is usually used by Ush diplomats when they visit here. There is no-one here or due to arrive for some time. As they are similar in stature to yourselves it is the best place for you to stay. I will show you round but then I must leave you until next light.”

The residence was not very large but was fully equipped and well stocked with various foods. Adzly’s daughter took the time to recommend some foods while suggesting that they avoid others that were very specific to the Ush. By the time she had finished it was dark.

“Officer, thank you for that. Night fell quickly, how long is a day or light here?” Pawl was intrigued to know how long it would be before dawn.

“It will be one hundred and sixty darfs before dawn. At this season a day is three hundred and fifty darfs. Captain, I must go. I will return twenty darfs after first light.”

After she had left Pawl turned to the team.

“That means days here are quite long. Around twenty-six hours, so not a lot different to Eden.”

“Pawl, do you think the food will really be okay to eat?” Molly was her usual starving self. She had never fully understood the envy of the other females back home at her ability to eat without adding any weight. Food was for eating, not for worrying about, unless there wasn’t any, of course.

“Our friend seemed quite comfortable that, if we could eat food grown on Eden, we would have no problem here. I guess I would suggest a degree of care. Don’t overdo it, taste first, the difficulty might be deciding what needs to be cooked. It doesn’t really resemble our own food but that doesn’t mean it isn’t edible.”

Conversation died for a while as they tested the food and finally put together a meal over which they began talking again.

“I don’t think our escort is terribly happy about being given this job.” Hidecki commented. “How did the Deputy Commander describe her? Officer Senior and his daughter?”

“He did. Funny about her not jumping at the chance. They’ve admitted that they haven’t known a first contact in hundreds of years. Being responsible for relations with a new species would have seemed to me to be a compliment from the powers to be, unless they are actually trying to distance themselves from us.”

“I wonder.” Hal quietly interrupted.

“Go on, Hal.” Pawl grinned, it had taken a while before he had realised that Hal was quite shy and tended to hold back from giving his opinions.
