TWENTY-ONE

Jim recognized Knight’s plan as soon as he’d said he’d lower his gun. He’d averted his eyes, and as soon as his audio pickups registered a pop, he sprang forward, letting his M& dangle on its sling and swinging his tomahawk at the nearest hostile trooper.

His old friend barreled into the disoriented squad like a bowling ball striking a bunch of pins, his fighting bar fully extended and smashing limbs and helmets. The euro astronauts were far from idle, each unrestrained on tackling the nearest trooper and the PLSSF sergeant nearest Marcus Wu wrestled his gun away as he wiped his eyes. The other sergeant tackled her and they rolled away, bringing Jim’s focus back to his target. He buried his tomahawk in the back of a trooper wrestling with a curly haired astronaut and yanked the man backwards before rolling away from a long knife directed at him.

The knife wielder chased him, swinging erratically and wildly while Jim dodged and weaved until he bumped into Knight’s back.

“Could use some help here, Ollie,” he grunted. He ducked under his friend’s meaty arm which swung around like a pendulum, the tip of his fighting bar smashing the knife wielder’s helmet like an egg. Jim gripped his pant leg while he was low, swinging around his friend’s tree trunk legs to sweep Knight’s opponent’s feet from under him. The trooper hit the ground with a thud and Jim buried the tomahawk in his neck.

By now, the fight was wrapping up. Jim’s squad pulled goons off the astronauts and stabbed them while Knights finished or restrained the ones who’d been stunned by their squad leader’s initial attack. The PLSSF sergeant who’d turned tossed the other one down in a pair of restraints, while Yang had Marcus Wu in a similar situation. Corporal Jun, and his squad, kept their weapons slung, hands where they could see them.

With things calming down, Knight’s squad retrieved their weapons and took up a security posture as Knight brought up Baker to look over the Astronauts before their own people got patched up. They met Yang and Carter in the center of the mess, but not before sharing a fist bump as they looked over the aftermath.

“What the hell was that?” Carter asked as he opened his visor.

“No hostages or friendlies lost,” Jim said. “I’d call that a win.”

“Same,” Oliver said as they opened their visors. “Now, what are we going to do about those guys? Or any of these people?” He swept his arm across the deck and gestured to not just the PLSSF troopers that stood by while the other squad had been savaged, but the European astronauts.

“Release me immediately,” the other PLSSF Sergeant demanded.

“No,” Yang replied as the one that helped them raised her visor and approached them. She had a a much younger face than Jim had expected, but she carried a weight in her eyes that told him she’d seen the elephant a long time ago.

“I’m Sergeant Song Zhou,” she said. “Captain Wong snatched these people from their station on titan against their will.
