Chapter 14

Morlock stared at the baggies with haunted eyes, his flask at the ready. He seemed to be able to hold his guts in check if he didn’t think too hard about what they were made of. When she managed to get him on the phone, it had surprised St. Augustina that he had offered to come into the office himself, instead of her going to him with her evidence. Judging by his expression, she could now understand why.

“Has anybody else seen these?” he finally asked, still not breaking his gaze from them.

“No, I only found it the other night. We had planned to send them out for testing, but we’re having difficulty getting a lab to take us on. Do you know what they are?” St. Augustina asked, folding her arms across her chest as she leaned against an empty desk.

Morlock released a held breath in a tired sigh that seemed generations old. “Yes, though I am probably one of a handful of people who could actually identify these things on sight. They are ‘Farmecul pentru a lega strigoii,’” he said suddenly speaking a language St. Augustina’s implants struggled to immediately translate. “Charm to bind the undead,” he added in English, just as her implants caught up, displaying the same words within her sight.

Officer Papaqui stepped beside Morlock, offering him a cup of freshly brewed coffee from a crystal-run brewer she had brought from home.

He took it but didn’t make any move to sip. “Where did you find these?”

“In a cabinet, in Boyd’s apartment. Inside a drawer enchanted to both be not noticed and difficult to open.”

“How did you find it then?” Morlock asked, finally looking at St. Augustina.

“Boyd’s aunt helped me. She also let me in. I understand the lease for the apartment is in her name.”

Morlock sniffed at that. “Well, that clears up any legal grayness we would have otherwise had, if she aided in the search.”

The Saint nodded. “Do you think this will be enough to qualify having Boyd moved to Magic Guild jurisdiction?”

“Oh, gods yes. If this doesn’t, then nothing will and we are in more trouble than we all realized,” Morlock said and finally quaffed a deep drink of his office-provided coffee.

St. Augustina straightened. “Then we have everything we need to go to the judge and get the transfer order.”

“Who is the judge?” Morlock asked.

“Alonzo Alvarez-Hughes.”

Morlock seemed to roll that around in his head a moment. “I can go to the judge and request the transfer on behalf of my client.”

“You’re Boyd’s lawyer?” St. Augustina asked, surprised.

“No, not yet, not yet.” He met her gaze with his own, and then he reached into an inner pocket of his jacket and withdrew a business card. “But if I was, a plea from a member of the Magic Guild for Magic Guild protection will get the transfer done faster than one from the Magic Guild, especially…. I can request that it be sealed.” He handed her the card. “Give this to Boyd. Have him call me. I will take his case.
