This time it was the cold that woke her. That, and the fact that she couldnât feel her arms.
She rolled her shoulders and blood surged into her numb limbs.
Agony flamed.
She whimpered.
Again, something skittered in the darkâthis time dashing over her extended legs.
She gasped and drew her knees up to herself.
Her head throbbed. She tried to see where the creature had gone, but it was still so dark. How long had she been unconscious this time? Without the aid of the sun it was hard to tell.
Thirst thickened her tongue.
She worked her mouth. Then realized it was the gag making her mouth dry.
Another roll of her shoulders made her clamp her teeth on the gag. Could she use her shoulder to push the gag from her mouth?
She pressed her cheek firmly against one arm and tried, but to no avail. It was tied too tightly.
She gave up in defeat, and dropped her head against one of her bound arms.
A memory surfaced. She was a young mother and her son, Reagan, had begged her to play âsheriff.â No wonder since his father made a living as a lawman. Reagan had âtiedâ her to one of the straight back chairs from the dining tableâreally nothing more than a few loops of rope around her. He left the room then to âhunt down the outlaws who had dared to capture his mother,â and Wade came home just then. A spark glinted in his clear blue eyes as he took in her predicament.
He leaned close, propping his hands on the arms of the chair. âI see youâve been captured by outlaws again.â
She smiled. âSome lasses are forever charging into trouble, donât you know? But God will protect me and the ones I love. He always does.â
âMmhmm. Thatâs the Jacinda Callahan I know and love.â He gave her a lingering kiss before straightening with a wink. âIâd better go find our illustrious sheriff so he can rescue you before dinner burns. Again.â
She laughed. âCouldnât his partner free me just this once? After all, the good Lord sent you at just the opportune moment.â
He shook his head. âOh no! Never take away the thrill of a manâs job. The rescue is the only reason for all the risks we take in this line of work.â He leaned close and whispered warmly, âI promise to hurry him along. And then later you and I can celebrate your rescue good and proper.â He gave her a double-pump of his brows.
Sheâd laughed. âIf I have to scrub burnt pans again, Iâll be too tired to celebrate.â
He had rushed from the room on the run, causing another round of chuckles.
Jacinda sighed and relaxed. Thank You, Lord, that I can always rest in Your will, knowing that You take care of me. Verses sheâd memorized as a young mother filled her mind. Because you have made the Lord your refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place, No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.
