'WHAT DID YOU say?' Sergeant Borysko stared at the lieutenant in disbelief.
The man had a hawkish, raptor-like quality. Here was a man, thought Borysko, who wouldn't let anything stop him catching his prey, and who would never give up before he had done so. The presence of his ogryn-like bodyguard would help see to that.
The sergeant was minded of the infamous quote attributed to General Krylus at the liberation of Quixote IX, and borrowed by a hundred commanders since: I don't know what the enemy will make of him, but he scares the hell out of me. If Lieutenant Tremayne was on your side, you had a loyal officer for life. But if he was against you?
The stink and smoke of cooking ork corpses wafted up the defile to where Borysko and the lieutenant were arguing.
The hunters had collected the bodies of the greenskins at the bottom of the gully and Yeydl had ignited the bonfire with a heat pulse from his meltagun.
'I said it is imperative that I complete my mission. It is a matter of global security. And I would appreciate it if you would address me as "Sir", sergeant.'
'My orders – sir – are to take you back to Cerbera for pick up by your colleagues, lieutenant.'
'Then I am countermanding that order, sergeant.' said the lieutenant, 'and I think you'll find I outrank you.'
'Not out here, you don't.' sneered Raus.
'Shut it, Weasel!' Borysko snapped.
If there was one thing that Borysko most definitely was – even if his superiors back at Cerbera Base had trouble believing it – it was fiercely loyal, to Armageddon and to the structure of command, even if he might speak disrespectfully about it. If a superior officer gave him an order, even if he needed a little persuading, in the end he would ultimately do what he was told.
He was a xenos hunter and yet tolerated having an alien kroot along as part of his team, because he had been ordered to do so. Compared to that, relinquishing one set of orders in favour of those given him by Lieutenant Tremayne was nothing.
And besides, he had to admit a grudging respect for the ACG bigwig. The lieutenant was a ruthless man, but then he had needed to be to survive even one hour out in the Green, let alone a day as he had.
'So what is this mission of yours that's going to make such a difference to the whole stinking war for the planet?'
'You are to accompany me to the location of a lost research base of the Adeptus Mechanicus Xenos-Genetor sub-cult.'
'A research base? Out here?'
'That is what I said.'
'I thought I'd heard of all the bases our side had out in the Green.'
The lieutenant sighed with impatience. 'Obviously not this one.'
'And why do you need to go there?'
'That is on a need to know basis, sergeant.'
'And, let me guess, I don't need to know.'
'No. You don't.'
But Borysko still wasn't comfortable being challenged by some hive-born politico. 'And if I refuse, sir?'
'You won't refuse.
