“That was over ten years ago now. A lifetime it seems like, I hadn’t seen my wife and family, until I laid eyes on Yoshi when you came to Iki Island. Even since I’ve been here and I came to my senses I have only been in this cell. My father has visited but that is all. I don’t suppose you can tell me about my family, about my son, my daughter, and… my wife?” Miyamoto asked, hesitantly.

I was quiet for a moment and just stared at the prisoner as he finished his story and looked miserably yet also expectantly at me at the same time. It was a look I was more than familiar with. A look that most people who’d gone through some type of traumatic event that they believed was their fault all shared. It was the same look that I had when I saw Mallory’s face after the escape pod crashed. The physical damage that had been done to her was so great that I couldn’t help but be horrified, but I still held out the hope that she’d be okay, somehow.

Of course, I was completely in the wrong and she was not okay, far from it. The brief melancholy that rose up inside me whenever I thought about her was probably the reason that I was feeling some sort of sympathy for Miyamoto. Maybe it was something else, I wasn’t sure exactly what it was but I did as he asked and let him know the little that I knew of the brief history of his estranged family.

I started by telling him about how his wife, Lady Tanaka Yuriko, was the island’s head seamstress and the person who was basically in charge of all their many varying textile projects. Then, I told him about his daughter, Yuki’s culinary skills, and how she was now working in Lord So’s kitchen as my righthand, my Sous chef. I explained what that meant and how hard she worked and how skilled she was at the job. After that, I moved on to Yoshi and saw the prisoner visibly steel himself as I spoke his son’s name.

Instead of punishing him with rhetoric, I told him the truth about how Yoshi’s mentality was before I came, which he’d known about but not the full extent, and then about the medicine I’d given him. I related how he fully recovered from his illness and physical issues and how he was now a leader among the other men his age and one of the brightest minds on the island.

Miyamoto smiled proudly as I talked about his family and I could see the weight that he had been bearing lessened somewhat as I told him how successful they all had become. I let him have his small moment of relief before I dropped the proverbial hammer on him.

“Yes, your family have all thrived since you’ve been gone. It’s almost as if they were better off with you not in their lives. Would you agree with that?” I asked, giving him a raised eyebrow while keeping my face a mask of neutrality.
