“Miss Penelope, I certainly do not recall telling you I was at the lighthouse keeper’s for supper last night.” The moment he picked her up for her trip to the fort, she started on him about Miss Eberly.

The old woman laughed. “You did. When you dropped me and the buggy off yesterday evening, you mentioned you had to clean up since you were invited to supper there.”

He grumbled a bit when he realized that he did indeed say that. “It was strictly business, nothing more.”

Miss Penelope laughed out loud, her little head shaking back and forth.

He turned to stare at her. “What are you laughing about?”

She pointed a skinny finger at him. “I can read you like a book and I’ve known you for approximately two weeks, son. If you didn’t find the keeper’s daughter charming, then I’ll eat my feather hat.”

He turned away, grinning.

“Ah ha! I thought so. I have been around a long, long time. You can’t fool me.”

“You may be right. Miss Eberly is quite charming, although I probably should not admit it to you. I’d rather not discuss it if you don’t mind. I’d hate that to get back to the Captain.”

“Oh, phooey. You are not talking to my nephew. He may be your higher up, but I doubt he’d reprimand you for falling in love.”

“Falling in love? That’s the last thing on my mind.”

She shook her head. “Are you certain?”

Her last words got him to thinking. He had been pure military for the past few years, not ever giving a thought to marriage or the love of a woman. Now, Miss Eberly was causing him to wonder what it would be like to have a relationship with someone.

He had to admit at times when he woke in the middle of the night and stood at the window staring into the darkness, loneliness did rear its ugly head and make him aware there was no one to share his life with. But, on the other hand, he never had time before to think about someone else until he got hurt. Why did the older woman have to bring this up when he was just trying to get by until he could get back to his unit? He was desperately wanting to be healed and go back to being a real soldier. “I’m not sure I like you, Miss Penelope,” he teased.

She laughed out loud again and shook her head. “I had you pinned the moment I saw the way you look at her. She is quite beautiful and doesn’t know it,” Penelope said. “I think she has done well for herself even without a mother to raise her properly.”

He didn’t say anything, but remembered their kiss and how forward she had been. He hadn’t minded at all, even if it wasn’t proper. Sometimes proper was just a word and didn’t mean a thing. “Her father is watchful of her,” he admitted. “At first he acts as if he is not interested in her well being, but it’s all a ruse.
