We know that the device, whether tablet, laptop, or smartphone, is simply an access device, a tool with a browser that allows us to access curriculum and assessment.

It could be a personal device, a take-home device, a classroom device, or a go-to device (computer lab).

We know that the user must have an understanding of the device and its use in order to derive benefit from it. Just as I must know how to sharpen a pencil, I must know how to boot the operating system and access the wireless network.

We cannot let understanding and use become the focus of devices, but we ignore these skills at the peril of those without this knowledge.

The most perilous of decisions is: “Is there one device that all can use?”

Or stated more clearly, is there one device that will fulfill all needs for all students all the time?

Obviously the answer is no. But that does not mean that we should not have devices—quite the contrary.

But this begs the larger questions about devices: what type, for whom, how to deploy, how to manage?

Can the Tao help us answer these questions?
