Chapter Seven: Challenges

There were always two kinds of people in life – those who thought of a difficult situation as a problem, and the others who considered it as a challenge. The difference between the two is that the first were always the victims, while the latter were those who walked away from the situation with victory. Like everything else in life, war has advantages as well. It makes people caught in the conflict face life as a series of challenges rather than problems. It raises up stronger generations that can survive in almost all circumstances.

This was the thought coming to me as I looked out at the big gates.

Out of my window, I could see the Stranger standing a few meters away from Camilia, his eyes so bright and full of love. He was very captivated by Camilia’s presence, as if she were the love of his life. I knew that expression, because I was carrying it in my own eyes, awaiting Sahara. Camilia touched the Stranger’s face, then gently pushed him away. I thought he was in love with Sahara like he told me, not with Camilia. Maybe she was his mother, since everyone here stays as old as when they died. I did not understand why she pushed him away, but I kept observing. Camilia was a tall lady, very elegant, and too mysterious. As she walked, talked, and pushed the Stranger away, I could see mystery radiating from her eyes. I looked carefully at her as she walked away and sat on a rocking chair by the door. Everyone came and sat by the stairs leading to the house I was staying at. Ryan said, “How are you Camilia?” and Zakharia was asking her about his daughter. Wahab sat on the ground by her feet, and Dalia sat by him. Camilia was breathing heavily, and before she would answer all their questions, she looked at what I was looking at – Sahara the country.

Lia and Shaya had one strong thing in common – they both saw difficult times as challenges, not problems. This explains why they always strived and achieved victory. They did not allow problems to bring them down in life or turn them into victims. They understood the art of conflict, and they excelled at dealing with it. Lia had done that years back when she escaped a chemical attack and was wanted as a terrorist. From that problem, or challenge as by her view, she co-founded the Sahara group, turned it into a country, and became its first lady – the mastermind behind almost every step in establishing the country. Shaya had gone through challenges in a different way. She had always been stronger than her feelings. When the Organization asked her to leave her glamorous life and head to Sahara, she saw the opportunity of becoming a more influential person in life. When she was instructed to marry Commander Ali, she did not see any betrayal to her lover Joshua. Instead, she thought of the power she will have in the country’s army.
