Maximizing Rate of Force Development

Harnessing force output over a very short time is often referred to as explosiveness. This characteristic is enhanced by power development exercises (see chapter 5). Standardized environments are recommended whenever players are required to lift heavy weight quickly. A lot of the same technique cues in the power development exercises, such as triple extension of the hips, knees, and ankles, are applied in explosive movements in a soccer game, such as the first step of the acceleration phase to close down an opposing defender or tracking down a ball played in behind the defense (figure 6.1).

Figure 6.1   Acceleration from a stationary position. The ideal triple extension through the hip, knee, and ankle are present in the rear leg. The driving leg has the hip and knee flexed at approximately 90 degrees.
