All four types of disruption cause similar stresses to educators, leading to less effective learning environments. Not only that, but disruptions can also fuel one another.

One of the most effective actions an educator can take when facing disruption is to focus on establishing or continuing the use of routines. Setting up routines can help create organization out of chaos, easing anxiety and increasing confidence and comfort in the learning process for teachers and students alike. Routines also help lessen the cognitive load of teachers' already demanding tasks, and they are a powerful way to help all parties increase their sense of competence by giving "participants opportunities to be effective across a variety of contexts and to strengthen intra- and inter-personal skills during the school day, in out-of-school-time experiences, or at work" (Hurley et al., 2019, p. 7).

Think about how each of the following strategies can support the teachers with whom you collaborate, and use these ideas as springboards in your coaching conversations.
