Lack of Acknowledgment and Support

At a recent medical conference of respiratory therapists, I sat in on a session entitled “Creating Healing Environments in Hospitals.” The speaker asked the audience a series of yes/no questions about their work experience and requested that they answer by raising their hands. The most hands went up when attendees were asked if they understood the mission of the organization, if they had adequate support for professional development, and if they knew what was expected of them. The fewest went up—maybe a quarter of the room—when asked if they had received praise in the last seven days or felt that their opinions counted. Different groups of workers will respond in different ways to such questions, of course, but clearly this is a challenge in many workplaces.

Amy recalls a situation in her company when her efforts were slighted, along with those of her colleagues.

The four coordinators in our department were a pretty qualified bunch. We worked hard. We did good work. And, to a big extent, we worked independently and somewhat autonomously— each had our “pet” projects and responsibilities. Yet, when discussing each of these projects during a retreat, the marketing director would consistently mention the manager that the project fell under, rather than the coordinator who actually did the work and in most cases had all the information about it. . . . It simply didn't sit well with me to have someone else be given, and consequently take, credit for my work. And it wasn't just happening to me, it was happening to my coworkers, too.
