Chapter Twenty-Five

“It is vital that we bring all patient and plague data here to CDC headquarters where our best researchers and antagonistic machine-learning systems can work together for a solution. Even then, we have only a slim chance of stopping or even slowing this.”

— E-Notes of Jayden Wyatt, CDC scientist, Atlanta, Georgia

The dojo floor was much emptier than usual for announcements. It didn’t help that it was late on a Saturday. The masks on everyone’s faces also underscored the real danger that kept many scrappers away. Even the spectator stands were sparsely populated, with each ’zen keeping at least a seat or two between them and their nearest neighbor. Everyone wanted the latest information, but no one wanted to get sick.

Sento whispered to her out of the side of his mouth. “Don’t worry, the people here will spread the word. It won’t take long before everyone hears what they say here even if a neighbor has to yell it over a fence from the safety of his yard.” Bushi-sensei continued to drone on with information the two fighters already knew. The white mask on the grizzled old teacher’s face blended in with his patchwork beard, hardly affecting his looks. He was giving specifics about family ration allotments, the continued hold on all arena fights and the gruesome details of the death wagons. This included instructions to take precautions with the newly dead and their infectious belongings. It occurred to Kiriai that Isha might want to approach the deathmen for help. Just as quickly, Kiriai dismissed the idea, realizing how busy the deathmen would be. They were probably looking for recruits as much as Isha was. But maybe if they got Ojisan back, he could use them.

“Our last topic is a distasteful matter.” The disapproval in Bushi-sensei’s voice pulled Kiriai’s attention back to the front. As expected, he was glaring in her and Sento’s direction. He had been in the meeting with Boss Akuto earlier. Kiriai gulped, realizing it was time.

“Many of you may have heard of the shameful behavior yesterday of Senior Scrapper Kiriai.” Murmurs rose in response among both the scrappers and the spectators. Kiriai forced herself not to flinch at the looks they gave her. Remembering the cheers in the arena only days ago reinforced how transient a reputation could be. At least everyone wasn’t glaring. Some looked puzzled and at least a couple looked as if they disagreed with the sensei’s description. Maybe she would still have supporters after all this was over. The old sensei waited for the chamber to quiet again before he continued. “She has insisted on challenging Burb Chief Kosui for the return of her grandfather, Fixer Ojisan. While that is her right, by ancient tradition, our boss made it clear to her it would damage our relationship with Southern Burb. She has insisted on going forward anyway.” Bushi-sensei paused for
