Day Two

Clive pulled the Jeep to a stop in front of Neil’s shop building. Dirk was waiting in the open bay doors. He bent slightly, looking inside the vehicle as if searching for Mia and the boys. A disappointed expression crossed his face.

Neil cranked down the window. Beau jumped into Neil’s lap and poked his head out the opening. “Did you get the F-150 running?”

“Yes, sir!” Dirk said, scratching Beau behind the ear. “We replaced the battery and tinkered with her a bit, and she started right up. I got the guys working on the F-250 behind the shop and that old GMC from the scrapyard. They’ll need more work and a few more parts, but I think we’ll have them running by nightfall.”

“Let’s put that aside for the moment,” Neil said. “Gather the cowboys and return to the bunkhouse so they can get outfitted for the search for Mia and the boys.”

Neil leaned forward toward the front seat and placed a hand on Melody’s shoulder. “I think you should stay back in case Mia and the boys come home.”

“But—” she started to protest.

“They could need you, Melody. No telling what shape they could be in.”

“I…um…” She sighed. “Okay,” she said, climbing from the Jeep. “I’ll head up to the house and grab you guys some water and food?”

“Thanks, sweetheart. We’ll be in the bunkhouse. I’m going to brief the guys.”

Neil opened the Jeep’s door, and Beau leaped out. As the border collie took off for the barn, Neil exited the Jeep and set out toward the wranglers’ quarters.

Dirk adjusted his cowboy hat. “I’ll get the guys.”
