CHAPTER 10

“Is your bag all packed?” Kelly stood at the kitchen window looking out at the clearing sky. Cole’s lack of response was a sure sign it wasn’t, but even more concerning was her fear he wouldn’t. “Cole?”

“I’ve been thinking that maybe I will postpone the trip.”

“Why on earth for?”

“Truthfully? I’m afraid something might happen while I’m gone.”

“You’re only going to Oklahoma City, not Bagdad. I’ll be fine.” Kelly moved to the table and closed the travel brochure Cole was flipping through. “This has been on the calendar for a month. You can’t just cancel.”

“Do I really need to sign a bunch of books?”

“Are you forgetting the radio interviews?”

“I’m not forgetting anything. They can be done on the phone. I just think the timing doesn’t work. We’ve got a crazy, chopping people up. Someone tried to break into our house. I’m not going.” Cole’s tone clearly showed he would not be swayed.

“Have you called Rowan Jensen? He’s not going to be happy.”

“Under the circumstances, I’m sure he’ll whip it into a major story the press will eat up and we’ll get even more mileage out of.” Cole looked up and grinned.

“Is that for my benefit or are you playing this whole thing?”

A hard knock on the back porch screen interrupted Cole’s chance for an answer. The announcement was closely followed by Ernie’s presence at the kitchen door.

“Hello, Ernie. Just in time for some fresh-baked cinnamon rolls.”

“The hell you say. I’ll take two!” Ernie made his way into the kitchen.

“So did you smell the rolls or is this a neighborly visit?” Cole was always glad to see his friend, but sometimes his timing was bad.

Ernie held out a large revolver. “Pretty isn’t she.”

“She’s a real babe.”

Kelly spun around from the counter where she was frosting the rolls. Her big grin disappeared when she saw what Ernie was holding.

Ernie didn’t get Cole’s joke and continued. “It was my dad’s. He got it from an old man Daniels that used to live down the road. I was just a tike. I thought it was the neatest thing I ever saw.”

“How old is it?”

“No clue.” Ernie shrugged. “It’s a Colt 45, just like the cowboys used to carry in the movies. That was all I cared about.” Ernie chuckled.

“Does it work?” Cole took the gun.

“Did when I was in high school. I took it out back and shot it one time when my folks were in town. Damn near knocked me down. Course, I was only about a hundred and thirty pounds dripping wet.”

“Now, that’s hard to imagine.” Cole teased.

“It’s been in my nightstand since my dad died. You never know, living this far out.”

“You ever needed it?”

“No, but just the same.” Ernie was dead serious. Cole decided to let it go. “Georgia isn’t too happy about having a gun in the house, but she understands it is a family heirloom. Least that’s my story.” Ernie grinned.

“She is right.” Kelly frowned.

“We got no kids. She’s not going to touch it. What difference does it make?” Ernie was not pleased with Kelly’s remark.
