Hannah Harker had been injured with a through-and-through bullet, then stitched up and given pain meds. She was staying overnight for observation. She slumped in her hospital bed, and Brigitte knew she didn’t have much time before Hannah crashed from the meds.

“Hannah, we are so sorry about what happened.” Brigitte laid a gentle hand on her arm, and Duke stood at the foot of the bed. After they gave their statements to Detective Collins, they’d driven straight to Gran Valle General and waited on news about Hannah and her condition. Guilt nipped at Brigitte for standing over a woman who’d been shot, only to ask her for information. Seemed insensitive. But Hannah might now be a target if the killer knew she had useful information. Gran Valle had placed an officer at the door for that very purpose. But no point in terrifying the woman further.

“You said you sort of saw the man who’d been in his car outside Jamie’s home. You hollered at him, and he drove away. And that she mentioned things had gone missing from her house. Can you remember what those items might have been?”

Now was not the time to whip out her sketch pad. Hannah’s faculties weren’t sharp. Brigitte glanced at Duke, and he leaned over the bed. “Hannah, can you recall the items she thought were missing?”

“I can’t remember. I’m sorry.”

Could be the meds fogging her recall. “Did you tell the police about this? Make a report?”

“Not official. But we told a friend of the family who works for Gran Valle PD.”

Duke flashed Brigitte a hopeful expression. “Name?”

“Chris. Chris Collins. He’s a detective.”

Detective Collins had taken their report and never once mentioned he knew Hannah, and he hadn’t mentioned on the homicide report he’d been notified of stalking. Could be because he felt bad for not taking it seriously—if that were the case—or it could be negligence.

Or something else.
