“Obviously Drew Roberts was one of the men on the island,” Tessa told the fake Wilson. Her voice was casual, almost airy, but Anthony could feel an iron sword moving through it. The fake Wilson seemed preoccupied with whatever he was looking at on his phone, but Anthony could tell he was listening.

“How’d you figure that?” Wilson asked. He took a step closer to her. But he still hadn’t stepped into the camera’s video.

“Well, you were attacked by the man in the green mask, right?” Tessa asked. “Big guy. Your size. He stabbed you.”

Out of view. Where Anthony and Tessa had been only able to hear the ruckus.

“He was wearing this big fake prosthetic nose under his green mask,” Tessa said and tapped the end of her nose for emphasis. “Not to mention a dark wig with a red bandana.”

Just like the red bandana the fake Wilson had bound his cut with. A shallow cut that looked far worse than it actually was. Fake-Wilson’s face paled to an ugly, ashen gray.

“That’s ridiculous,” he spluttered. “I saw that guy when he jumped me. His mask came off and everything. It wasn’t that guy.”

“Well, you were pretty focused on fighting him off,” Tessa said. “He attacked you. Multiple men attacked you. You were just defending yourself while trying to escape.”

And just like that, Anthony watched as Wilson relaxed again.

“Yeah,” he said.

“Seriously, leaping right down the rocks the way you did instead of trying to find a safer route took major guts.”

“It did.”

Color began to return to his face.

“The whole thing from start to finish was really brave,” Tessa added.

“Yeah,” Fake-Wilson agreed. His chest rose slightly. “It was.”

Tessa murmured and nodded, but she didn’t reply. Instead, she left a long empty pause, which, after a moment, Wilson began to fill with a retelling of how he’d heroically survived the fight and escaped the island. The whole story was a lie. Anthony saw it now. Standing in front of him was a man who on some level desperately wanted to believe he was braver than he actually was.

But what shocked Anthony even more was how Tessa was silently encouraging the story out of him, one word at a time, as Wilson slowly walked himself into a trap of his own making, where he’d have no choice but to tell the truth to escape.

The plan might’ve been for Tessa to be the one on the hot seat. Instead, she was now interrogating Wilson, with such skill that he didn’t even realize it.

Part of Anthony knew he should step in and take charge of the room. But another part of him wanted to see where Tessa was going with this and what she’d get Wilson to admit. If he cut her off now, would Wilson clam up? Would it take even longer to get to the truth?

For that matter, why wasn’t Zablocie stepping in and ending this? His boss had to be watching it. Was he also waiting to see where Tessa was going?
