CAFÉ AU LAIT

“Café au lait” is fun to say because it rhymes, but it is less fun to drink. It is basically a latte with brewed coffee instead of espresso. There is one place it is acceptable to order this drink, and that is as a tourist in New Orleans, where it is the standard serving method of chicory coffee, which is the standard accompaniment to beignets. And beignets are delicious.

BOTTLED COLD BREW

Several really good roasters (and now a few not-so-great ones) make ready-to-drink bottles of cold brew coffee. It is a fine option for a picnic (assuming you can’t be bothered to make your own) or if your only coffee option is a grocery store (you can generally find them in Whole Foods Markets and the like), but why go to coffee shop then pay a barista $4 to unscrew a bottle cap for you? The product is generally not quite as nice as cold brew made in small batches in-store, you’re paying a premium for the bottling, and it’s not environmentally friendly for cafés to open a new bottle for every single drink. Screw that.
