Daisy’s mind was a whirl as she played Christian’s last words over and over in her head. It’s a date. That’s what he’d said. It’s a date. But what had he meant by that?

As she sat on the Tube, she mulled it over again and again. It was just an expression, wasn’t it? He didn’t mean that their lunch was an actual date? After all, they’d had brunch together before, and that hadn’t been a date. Besides, if he’d actually been asking her out, he would’ve suggested dinner, surely? Who did lunch dates? No one that she knew, excluding Bex – but then before Newton, Bex would have agreed to an elevenses, lunch time, teatime and dinner date all in one day if it meant she was going to meet Mr Right. No, this was just another marketing meeting, surely. Because there was no chance someone like Christian would want to date someone like her. Even though she was technically 100 per cent single.

Daisy had been to the restaurant in Covent Garden once before, to celebrate Claire and Ian’s engagement, but that had been a very long time ago, and she suspected it had changed since then. She had once again spent far longer than average deciding what outfit to wear to hit the right tone. Given how warm the day was, she opted for a patterned summer dress with small purple buttons down the front. Playful, yet sophisticated, that was the look she was going for, and the one she hoped she was pulling off. Though as she stepped in through the doorway and into the restaurant, her nerves rocketed.

The restaurant was even more stunning than she remembered. For a moment, she forgot why she was even there. Her eyes scanned the decor, from the classic black-and-white checked tiles on the floor to the brightly coloured paintings on the walls. Whoever designed the place had a masterful eye, somehow creating something that was timeless, and yet modern, though it was the bar that really held her attention. She could only imagine the number of cocktails she and Bex could enjoy sitting there as they made up stories about all the men and women that milled around them. Not that she’d be able to afford more than one cocktail.

‘Daisy, over here.’

Christian stood beside a small, round table with his hand in the air, though the moment Daisy clocked him, he moved away from the table to meet her.

‘How is my artistic superstar doing?’ Before she could respond, he had pulled her in for a kiss on the cheek. ‘Come, our table is this way.’ Wordlessly, Daisy followed him over to the table, where he pulled out a seat for her.

‘So how many of the articles did you see?’ he asked as he filled up her glass with water.

‘How many? I saw two. Were there more?’

‘Just a couple. Though they all say pretty much the same thing.’

Daisy didn’t want to know how many more just a couple was.

‘I can’t believe it. I’ve had people from my old job ringing me up, saying they’ve seen photos of me.
