It sounded familiar, though she couldn’t quite remember when she’d said it.

Still crouched on the ground, she continued to read.

This was actually my father’s boat. It’s a piece of history, and I’m so lucky to be bringing it back to life again.

Daisy shook her head in disbelief. She certainly hadn’t expected words from her conversations with Christian to be quoted and used in the local press, but she could hardly be cross. Not with exposure like this.

When she had finished reading the article in the Standard, she moved on to the Echo. This piece was far smaller, just two pictures and an announcement about a silent auction for contemporary art that would take place on Wildflower Lock. Contemporary art? Is that what she painted? Apparently, Christian thought so.

‘Are you planning on buying one of those?’ the teenager asked from behind the counter. ‘This isn’t a library, you know.’

‘Sorry. Yes, yes, I am. I’m going to buy them now.’

With both papers in her arms, she paid up and headed outside, an insane grin fixed on her face. An artist. That was how she was being described. A local artist.

Even when she was back at Wildflower Lock, her grin was still in place. Her phone rang. She stared at the name for a second before answering.

‘So? Have you seen the articles?’

She hadn’t thought her smile could stretch any further, but the sound of Christian’s voice did it.

‘I can’t believe you did that. How did you do that?’

‘You’re not mad, are you? I know I took liberties with some of your quotes, but what you said was so emotive, and I knew that if I showed that side of you, people would be just as taken by you and your story as I am.’ His voice trailed off, before he spoke again. ‘Can you forgive me?’

‘Well, let me think about that…’ Daisy tried to stretch out a sense of tension, but could barely keep herself from bouncing on the spot. ‘Okay, I’ve decided: you’re forgiven, you’re definitely forgiven.’

Though it shouldn’t have been possible, Daisy could have sworn she heard him smiling down the line.

‘Well, seeing as you’re in such a good mood and I’m clearly in your good books, do you fancy meeting me for lunch? I don’t want to disturb your painting, but I was thinking the Ivy. My treat.’

Given the level of adrenaline pumping through her, Daisy wasn’t sure she’d be able to sit still to paint. And she wanted to see Christian, if for no other reason than to thank him.

‘It sounds perfect.’

‘Brilliant, I’ll see you there. How does twelve sound? Is that okay, or is it too early?’

‘Twelve sounds great,’ Daisy replied reflexively, before she considered how long it would take her to get changed and get into London. She could park at her mum’s and get the bus and Tube, but she’d still need a little more time. ‘Actually, can we make it twelve-thirty?’

‘Brilliant, it’s a date.’
