Chapter
Thirty-Nine
The moment the lift doors opened on lights, people and colourful artwork, I guessed where we were. An enormous mural of the lead characters from Drengr was on the right side, and on the left was an unmistakable depiction of one of Drengrâs sister games. Iâd never played it, but the Fae in the centre had a distinct look of Lâeon except for the large fake pointy Elven ears instead of his true discreetly pointed Fae ear tips. Lâeon was DeâAnnaâs son and one of AdâRianâs other nephews, and now that I thought it through, wouldnât that make him Rolloâs cousin? I should probably have worked that out before, shouldnât I? It would have explained why he helped create Rolloâs Thor glamour. Iâd been slow there. And it made me wonder what else I was missing.
Rollo had obviously followed my thinking because he said, âYes, he is. Want a coffee?â
We passed the murals, walked by several glass cases holding awards, trophies and game packaging, and headed straight to an area that looked like a cross between a cocktail bar and a Starbucks.
The male barista with a distinctly Australian accent gave Rollo a huge smile. âHey, they said you were back, but I was on holiday. Stoked to see you, man. Usual?â
âThanks, Logan, two of them, please.â
The guy smiled at me as Rollo pointed at a water bowl on the floor. I released the tension on Tillyâs lead so she could reach it. They obviously really did welcome dogs here.
Drinks in hand, we strolled through the coffee shop, weaving around the tables. All the people at the tables had laptops open, and most had earbuds in. Finn would be in heaven here. I followed Rollo down a short glass corridor to a railing, then came to an abrupt halt as I looked down through the middle of the building to the floor below. There were desks and computers everywhere below me.
It was impressive and fun. And an idea was waving at me from the back of my brain.
Rollo led me towards another lift. We came out at the top of the building with an incredible view of Edinburgh from the full-height window opposite the doors. At a large double-doored frosted glass entrance, he held the right-hand side open until Tilly and I were inside a small anteroom. More of the same doors were to the right of what was obviously a small reception room with an assistantâs desk. Again, he opened the right-hand side door, and we walked into an office that looked like a movie set. Or something that a modern Scandinavian designer had submitted to a competition for an elegant, twenty-first century office space.
The space was filled with low sofas, bean bags and those curved wooden chairs that, thanks to womenâs magazines, I knew cost a fortune. These werenât the affordable Ikea versionâthese were the real deal. There was a vast, stupidly high, curved, frosted desk with light wood supports and fourâno, fiveâlarge monitors on it. Mounted on two of the walls were more large screens.
