Chapter Eighteen

Joe – Montreal Canada, the Second Day, 1992

“Shit!” Joe didn’t remember getting out of his chair. He paced the room, rubbing his hand over his head and looking alternately out the window and at Nanette for verification that he had heard what she said correctly.

The bent, old Canadian watched his reaction closely.

Joe stopped abruptly and wheeled to face her, a look of relief on his face. “You made that up too!” He accused. “She didn’t really say that.”

Nanette dashed his hopes by shrugging slightly, tilting her head, and making an apologetic face, closed-lipped half-smile, eyebrows raised, eye lids dropped.

“Her exact words.”

Deflated, Joe sat back down heavily, squeezing his eyes shut and blowing out a big breath. It was hard enough to deal with the fact that his grandmother had killed a man so up close and personally, but he’d expected her to feel at least some degree of remorse.

“It didn’t bother her at all?” He felt desperate.

“It might have, if things had gone differently.”
