WHISKEY SMASH
Along with juleps, smashes were very popular in the mid-nineteenth century in the United States. With their base of fresh mint, sugar, and liquor, smashes were prepared with a three-piece shaker, while juleps were mixed directly in the glass. The lemon was added in later years.
• 6 MINT LEAVES
• ½ LEMON, QUARTERED
• 2 OZ (60 ML) RYE WHISKEY OR BOURBON
• ¾ OZ (20 ML) SUGAR SYRUP
In a shaker, muddle the mint with the lemon pieces.
Add the remaining ingredients and ice, then shake.
Pour through a fine strainer into an ice-filled old-fashioned glass.
GARNISH : add 1 mint sprig.
