Chapter 23

Wednesday, December 6, 1972

Washington, D.C.

The Mercedes limousine sped along the George Washington Parkway heading toward. Aaron’s home in McLean, Virginia. Aaron reached over, removed the crystal decanter from the car’s sideboard, and poured Chivas into two glasses. He handed one to Robert.

“Thank you. You heard Jo and Andy set a date?” Robert said, his eyes hooded as he sipped his drink.

“Yeah. Jo called me yesterday. She said they were getting married at the Taxton ranch on February fourth. For Christ’s sake, what’s the big rush?”

“I think that is exactly the point—the big rush.” Robert’s shoulders sagged.

Aaron watched his friend. “You okay?”

Robert shook his head. He dug into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled paper. “This is why I made the sudden trip to Washington.” He smoothed out the creases and handed the telegram to Aaron. “I got this yesterday.”

SAUL

“Has this got anything to do with that call you made to Saul when you found out about Jo’s father and uncle spending weekends with Andy’s family?” Aaron asked.

“Yes. And, I need you to understand that this could potentially expose you to a dangerous situation.” Robert felt as if the air in the car had grown stale and he was suddenly claustrophobic. He opened the window a crack. The wind whistled, the outside sounds from the swishing cars too much of a distraction. He forced himself to focus as he pushed the button and raised the window.

“Robert, you know I’m your friend. I’ll do whatever you need.”

“Then there are things I must tell you.”

* * *

Golden rays of moonlight sent shimmering slivers of light through the window, shadowing the book-lined study where Robert and Aaron had been talking for over an hour.

Aaron ran his hands through his hair, his mind churning. “I’m trying to understand. I swear I am. But, first you said your wife Morgan died in Poland, and that you were notified of her death while on active duty during the war. Then you said she was in a concentration camp where she gave birth to a child, after she was suppose to be dead. And, you believe that baby was Jo. Now you are telling me that you think Morgan could still be alive.” Aaron squinted, his head pounding in disbelief and frustration at the confusing, almost surreal story.

“I know I sound crazy, and this information must seem more convoluted than it needs to be. I am sorry. There was no simple way to explain this to you. So much of this is speculation. What I do know for certain—Morgan is Jo’s mother.” Robert bore his eyes into Aaron. “And Hans Wells is her father.”

“And you believe all this because Jo looks like your deceased wife?” Aaron bit his tongue. He had not meant to sound so accusatory and disbelieving, and he wished he had thought more carefully before speaking because his words had hurt Robert. He could see it in his eyes.

Robert stood, reached into his pocket and hesitated a moment before taking out an envelope.
