Chapter 20

Perry

Perry was out of his chair the moment Leonie stirred, stroking her hair away from a forehead that was still far too hot. She blinked her eyes open but they were clouded and confused. He smiled at her. “Hello, beautiful. Ready to wake up?”

He helped her sit up, feeling her wince as she did so. “Do you hurt?” he asked, immediately concerned.

She shook her head, her movements sluggish. “’M okay,” she mumbled. “When can we go home?”

“Not yet,” he told her, trying to keep his voice soft. “You’re a little hot and we need to make sure everything’s okay.”

She rested her head against him. “Want to go home,” she insisted.

They both looked up as Benjamin walked into the room, promptly enough that it was evident he’d been closely watching Leonie on the monitor.

“Can I go home now?” Leonie asked him the moment he was through the door.

“Not yet,” Benjamin said. “You've got a bit of a temperature and I need to do some tests to find out why. First, though, I expect you're in a bit of pain. I've brought you some painkillers.”

He held out a small paper cup containing two tablets. Leonie looked at them but didn't reach for them. “When they did this to me, the medicine made my head go funny,” she said.

Benjamin nodded, understanding that she meant when the tracker had been implanted. “I think their priority was their convenience, rather than your comfort. They probably gave you sedatives. These won't do anything like that.”

She didn't look like she believed him, but she took the cup and closed her hand round it. “If I take these, then can I go home?” she asked.

He shook his head. “I'm sorry, we still need to find out why you've got a temperature. These are just about your comfort.”

She turned to Perry. “I just want to go home,” she pleaded.

He wrapped his arms round her and decided to try a different approach. “You aren't well enough, love. I'd worry that if anything went wrong we'd be too far from help. If you have to stay here, I'll be here too.”

She seemed a little reassured by that so he carried on, “I'll hold you while Benjamin does what he needs to. The sooner we find out what's wrong the sooner we can fix it.”

She remained quiet but did as he’d suggested without complaint while Benjamin took a blood sample.

“Why don't you go sit on the terrace?” Benjamin suggested when he'd finished. “You'd like it there, and you might feel less cooped up.”

It took a little organising, but shortly Perry and Leonie were sitting out on the garden terrace attached to the ward. Once they were alone, Leonie opened her hand which still contained the painkillers that Benjamin had brought.

“Would you take them, if it were you?” she asked.

Perry nodded. “If I was hurting like you are, yes. There's no need for you to suffer.”

In one quick move she swallowed them and then leaned back against him. They sat quietly for some time, but he could tell the pain was easing as the tension left her body.
