The linga is a symbol of the generative energy of the divine.

A special day in the Hindu tradition is the Mahashivratri holiday, a celebration of Lord Shiva, who is seen as the Supreme One, Unmanifest, and of the Trinity, the Creator. He is represented by the linga, a symbol of the generative energy of the divine. It is in the shape of a phallus often with a cobra on top which represents the presence of Shakti.

Shakti is the feminine energy of the universe and is what manifests into our world from the Unmanifest. The two are in an eternal dance. One example of their presence in our world would be the sun being Shiva and the sunbeam being the Shakti.

Peter shares with me the importance of visiting the temple for those in attendance today. “Shiva is seen as the most perfect husband. Blessings are sought from him today for those in need and seeking to manifest in their life.”

He adds, “Nearby is another temple that we can visit as it will not be as crowded. It is the Hanuman Temple.” We walk over there and are able to proceed as the crowd clearly was focused on seeing Shiva today. We spent time in the temple with Hanuman present as well as each of the trinity and their consorts. Eva rings the bell after giving a small donation. The bell aids in taking your wish to the deity.

Now, I am ready to return to the clinic. It is quite warm and we have about a thirty to forty-five-minute walk back to the clinic. I also have a shirodhara procedure happening soon. As we walk back, more cows greet us. They roam the street looking for food. Most look benign, but occasionally a cow can look more fierce. I make room for them whenever I see them. Suddenly, I hear a squeal in the distance. We see pigs in a cluster nearby, free to roam the streets as well.

Back at the clinic, I receive the shirodhara, which is given at the end of the day. Moist cotton balls are placed over my eyes to both reduce stimulation and protect the eyes from the oil being poured over the forehead. I feel tired and spent, yet carry a sense of inner calm after the release of the emotions at the start of the day. My mind is less engaged thus I find I am able to let go of the thoughts as they arise. Floating…that’s the word that comes to mind to describe the experience as I am reclining on the massage table.
