May 2016: A Mother’s Blessing
The statement Wes Morgan made about the players being like brothers touched hearts. It was true, most times after a match you would see the Leicester players leaving King Power together, sometimes two or three in one car. They were very familiar with each other, like family. They were all as one. Their friendly banter followed them outside the changing room as well, with Vardy joking around with N’golo Kante and Okazaki, always smiling and good natured.
Ranieri’s contribution to the climate was very hands-on in the way he treated everyone from the very first day he met the players. The cherry on top of the cake was when the final game between Tottenham and Chelsea ended in a draw. Jamie Vardy invited the whole gang over to his home to watch the game of their lives. When the final whistle blew, the whole squad fell on each other into a heap on Vardy’s living room floor after realizing they won the league.
Claudio did not watch the game between Chelsea and Tottenham. On the day of the match, which would determine if Leicester was going to be the champion or not, he traveled to Italy to visit his beloved mother for her 96th birthday, thus showing his compassionate side. Perhaps for his own peace of mind he chose to be with his mother instead of watching the match, as a type of personal psychotherapy.
He fully respected family values and always had from when he was very young. His wife and children came first and then everything else. He did not let his own needs get in the way of spending time with his family. He was not a vain man. He was celebrating with his mama instead of watching the match that made him champion of England. He wanted to live special moments with the people who supported him through difficult times. The players were his children and his family was like his big brother looking out for him.
In the 2015-2016 season, Chelsea, the team that he had been discouraged by, had now compensated him for this by giving him the opportunity to celebrate the title in all of its glory. That’s life. Sometimes you fly and sometimes you crash into harsh reality. The season came to an end and he wore a medal upon his chest and held the precious Premier League Cup in his arms. Claudio sealed his presence on the world football map forever and went down in history as the Thinkerman of football.
