The Milano Inn remains an institution, having been located on South College Avenue since the Depression. Courtesy of the Indiana State Library.

The restaurant limped on through the 1970s as various family members attempted to keep things afloat. Things looked pretty bleak in 1980, when neighboring business owner Leo LaGrotte purchased the building. Things had changed pretty dramatically in the neighborhood. Over time, the frame houses that lined College Avenue were demolished and replaced with light industry. College Avenue itself was converted to a one-way northbound street, making access to the restaurant challenging. LaGrotte envisioned knocking down the neighborhood landmark to make way for the expansion of his adjacent salvage business. Neighbors weren’t too keen on this news. Through persistent badgering, they convinced Mr. LaGrotte that the restaurant could be a success with the right vision. A full-scale renovation was undertaken, adding banquet rooms to the former upstairs apartments. A new chef by the name of Vickie Dragoo came in. Under her leadership, new menu items with a Northern Italian theme were added, and the restaurant became successful once again.
