She had been sitting with Aldaan in the reception room of the Seeker quarters for two hours with no sign of Larsen. He had been led into the chambers at the rear of the apartment and, other than the odd Xannix medic walking from one passageway to another across the corner of the room, there had been no sign that Larsen would be finished any time soon. At one point, she had been so bored that she decided to ping him a message. All she got in return was a short ‘I’m okay,’ which she took as good, but what she wanted was something like ‘I’m done, let’s go’. All the sitting around was giving her more anxiety about the situation than being on the move; at least while they had been moving it felt like they were doing something. What they were doing now felt too much like procrastination.

It hadn’t helped that Aldaan had gone into some sort of trance-like state about five minutes after they had sat down together. She had expected at least a little conversation but it appeared that meditating was higher on his list. Finally, she had decided to get up and walk around. The guards were quietly and calmly insistent that she stayed within the room—not quite a prisoner, just not allowed to roam. She had found herself at the window, looking out across the arcology.

From their position on the corner of the apartment building and at the height they were, the view was stunning. They were facing away from the main complex and out towards the wilderness beyond. To her, it looked very similar to pictures she’d seen of the forest lands of New Hampshire: the leaves were a multitude of reds, yellows and greens, so she guessed at the season being autumn, the air cool but sunny, crisp and refreshing. She suddenly wanted to be back outside and exploring, but that was going to have to wait.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Aldaan was suddenly by her side. She gasped in the sudden shock of being interrupted, her thoughts now scattering in all directions. Looking round startled, she found a soft smiling face staring far to the horizon. She wondered if all Xannix crept around as he did, or whether he did it on purpose.

She composed herself before she replied, “Yes. Very. They remind me of the more beautiful forests back on Earth. Of course, I didn’t see any personally, but there were vids and images. Really very wonderful.”

“I’m curious about your world,” said Aldaan. “It must have been hard to leave.”

That was true, but she had been taught from a young age that this was her purpose in life. And as the only other people she knew were also from the colonisation programme, this was all she had known. She had never questioned it. When she had reached an age where some natural questions about her path arose, she found that the reasons to give yourself completely to the colonisation effort far outweighed any reasons to rebel.
