Chapter Twelve
Brody watched carefully as they were shown repeatedly how to make the bed. Heâd called into the mercantile and purchased a comforter and two pillows, then met the women at the cottage.
He admitted Claire would be the more likely of the pair to make the bed each day, as he often began work early.
âNow itâs your turn, Claire.â The older woman stood back after pulling the freshly made bed apart.
Brody noticed the color drain from his wifeâs face. âI can help,â he said, wondering why she was so afraid of doing what was presented as an easy task. He shook himself mentally. Women make beds every day. It surely couldnât be that difficult.
âIf you must,â Mrs. Goodall said. âI do believe your wife is more than capable of this straightforward task.â
âLet me try,â Claire said, then began to flick the bottom sheet over the bed. After adjusting it to fit better, she tucked it in all the way around the bed, the way theyâd been shown. Repeating the process on the top sheet, but turning it down at the top, she placed the comforter and pillows on the bed.
Then she stood back and studied her handiwork.
âYou did well, Claire. Did you want to try, Deputy?â their tutor asked. âYou never know when your wife may be indisposed.â
Indisposed? What did Mrs. Goodall mean? âI suppose I could,â he said, not believing for even a moment he needed to learn. Claire pulled the bed apart, and Brody attempted to put it back the same way his wife had done moments earlier.
He struggled to begin with, but with a little encouragement, Brody managed. It wasnât perfect, but at least now they both knew what had to be done.
âWonderful,â Mrs. Goodall said, slapping her hands together. âYou have both done far better than I expected.â
Brody pulled Claire to him and held her against himself. Pride filled him at both their accomplishments.
âLetâs check the kitchen now, shall we?â the other woman said. Brody knew this would be a point of contention, since neither of them knew how to cook.
Mrs. Goodall went through the cupboards first. âYou need cake tins and trays, and a few other essentials. No urgency though.â
Brody glanced at Claire. She had gone bright red. As much as he wanted to, he couldnât stop her embarrassment at not knowing how to cook.
âLetâs check the pantry now.â They followed her into the small pantry, and watched as Mrs. Goodall assessed the contents. âYouâve done well. All the basics are there, except for dairy. Iâm guessing you left that until you knew when you were moving in?â
âIâ¦I donât know how to cook,â Claire said hurriedly. Did she think her words wouldnât be heard?
Mrs. Goodall stared at her, then offered to teach Claire to cook, and the offer was greatly appreciated. Not only by Claire but also Brody.
They followed Mrs. Goodall from one room to the next, until everything was covered. She suggested a small number of items for the bathroom, such as soap. Brody made a mental note to get those later today.
