While Kyra and her team began to count and question Tyrock's human population, Garwayn and I busied ourselves with making plans to rid the Fourteen Planets of Kennenryn's presence.
Both of us were loath to shed more blood, the last thing we wanted was another war or civil uprising, but we knew at this point it seemed inevitable. Besides that, we faced one other big problem.
"Who will be the susserayn once Kennenryn is gone?" I asked the obvious question; one we had avoided so far.
"Don't look at me, I would make a terrible susserayn," Garwayn waved his hands as if to ward off evil.
I sighed. "Me either. I love Marsh, and I despise Leander."
"I don't think any male besides Bramwyck aspires to be susserayn," I stated, massaging my temple.
"And with Bramwyck, we might as well keep Kennenryn," Garwayn added sourly.
We exchanged tired looks.
"We can't start all this without knowing who will replace the bastard," Garwayn added.
I shook my head. "Nye, because that's how Kennenryn got where he is in the first place."
The rebelling vissigroths during the last civil war had chosen Kennenryn for lack of choice and because everybody had been tired of the bloodshed. Too many good males had been killed. A compromise had been needed.
And now it seemed the compromise of the past was coming to haunt us in the future. I sighed. "Life is a vicious cycle."
Garwayn shook his head. "Our best option is still Mallack, butâ¦"
I nodded, zyn, but we both knew Mallack wasn't going to accept.
If he were to accept becoming the susserayn, he would have to produce an heir, and Mallack had made it clear that he would never mate again after his Daphne died so many rotations ago. Still, he was the oldest vissigroth among us, the most experienced.
Whoever would take Kennenryn's place would have to abdicate from his territory, and no good male would be willing to do that. After the last civil war, most surviving vissigroths were in their prime, unwilling to give up what they considered theirs, even to become the susserayn, and it seemed it wouldn't be much different this time around.
"Well there is still Athlyng, he is young, maybe if we appointed a guardianâ¦" Garwayn offered.
I considered his words. Athlyng was Kennenryn and Nyntha's son, and as such, the next susserayn in line. "But, he is Kennenryn's son."
"There is that," Garwayn nodded. "I do believe if a fair male was to raise him, he could make a good male."
"Maybe," I allowed, neither one of us was thrilled with the idea of ridding the Fourteen Planets of Kennenryn only to install his son.
Garwayn appeared just as at a loss as I, and his gaze moved out the window of his study toward the mountains, where the dragon had taken Myccael. "When was the last time anybody saw a dragon?"
"I thought they were extinct," I mused.
"We're living in strange times."
I nodded. My mind was still on a choice for a susserayn. "I have a feeling the Cosmic Coalition will meddle into our affairs sooner or later.
