CHAPTER TWELVE

Stradus

I waited at the head of the massive dinner table, watching as my servants arrived with plate after plate of food, having made a feast for me and my new mate.

Maddie had yet to arrive, though I knew she probably needed a moment to gather herself. Whatever her species was, it seemed the usual effects of heat were an entirely foreign concept to her.

I wondered if she’d find this feast, and the large table it was laid out upon, to be excessive. Were her people as wealthy as mine? Were such comforts as new to her as her heat?

Her clothing when I found her was meager, torn from her time in the forest. And when she looked about the mating chamber room, her eyes were wide and flitting from one thing to the next, as if she had never seen such riches.

If her species was one capable of spaceflight, though, then certainly she had technology and resources that made my own seem laughable. But then again, I heard tales of races that, despite having made it to the stars, kept their people poor and subjugated.

Had my omega been treated so inadequately? Did her people not know how precious she was?

Finally the main doors to the dining hall opened, and Bexi led Maddie into the room, guards following behind her, as I had previously ordered them to.

When Maddie saw me, her eyes brightened, then they turned to the food laid out upon the table. I motioned for her to sit on the other side, then waved my guards off so that we could be alone, with only two servants remaining in the shadows, ready to serve us food and drink.

“How are you feeling?” I said as one of the servants pulled out the chair for her.

She hesitated, her yellow hair now clean and put in a neat braid. “Um…” she began, eyeing the distant chair on the other side of the table, then turning her gaze to the one beside me.

She made her way over, opting to sit closer. I frowned, but decided it must’ve been a cultural thing. And if anything, I did like having my mate closer, even if she was sitting in a chair that was beneath her post.

The servant rushed over to the chair, pulling it out for her as she took her seat, looking uncomfortable with the entire thing. Just how lowly had her people treated her before she arrived here?

“I feel fine,” she finally answered, looking down at the empty plate and utensils the flustered servant had fetched for her from the head of the table. She then looked up at me, her eyes a shade of blue I would never tire of. “How… How are you?”

I held back a laugh. To think my condition warranted any worry on her part… “I’m fine, my omega.”

The other servant walked by, presenting a bottle of our finest gaveer. Maddie nodded at him, and he poured her a glass before passing by me and doing the same. The other servant served us havel, again, the finest my territory had to offer.
