CHAPTER FIFTEEN

AVA AND PETER arrived home, and Shaye didn’t stir. Crow put his finger to his lips and Ava smiled sweetly. “She looks so peaceful.”

“She’s been asleep for an hour,” Crow whispered.

“How were the kids?” Ava slipped her coat off and handed it to Peter.

Crow smiled. “You have wonderful children. They are very well behaved.”

Ava gave a quick nod. “Good.”

Crow leaned over and whispered in Shaye’s ear. “Nakuce, it’s time to wake up.”

She sat up quickly, although Crow didn’t think she was entirely awake. “Are they home?”

“Yes, sissy, we’re home.” Ava chuckled. “You need to wake up.”

“I’m awake. I’m awake.”

Crow stood to pull her off the couch. “Let’s get you home.”

Shaye forced herself into coherency. Crow couldn’t drive them home, so it was up to her. She grabbed her purse and keys and they made their way out to the car.

“Are you well, sweetheart?”

Shaye nodded. “Yes, just talk to me and keep me awake.”

Once home and securely through the front door, they went their separate ways to change. Shaye knocked on Crow’s door and entered when bid. He stood in the middle of the room, halfway through pulling a T-shirt over his head. She sighed.

“Is there something wrong?” He finished with his shirt and took her hand.

“Nothing’s wrong, per se. I just don’t want to sleep without you.”

Crow chuckled and leaned down to kiss her. “Would you like to sleep here, or shall I come to you?”

“Come with me, but don’t leave in the morning, okay? Wait until I’m awake.”

“I’m not going anywhere, Nakuce. I will be here forever.”

Shaye bit her lip. “Humor me.”

He kissed her palm and they made their way to her room. They climbed into bed and he pulled her close. “I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

Shaye woke a few times during the night, but she’d reach to feel Crow next to her and she’d sleep again. At one point, he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her close. The last thing she remembered was his kiss before she fell asleep for the last time.

The next morning, Shaye sighed with pleasure as Crow kissed her neck and whispered Creek words of love in an effort to wake her. “Good morning.”

Shaye smiled and opened her eyes. Glancing at the clock on her nightstand, she groaned. “Seven? You’re still on nineteenth-century time, apparently,” she complained.

Crow pushed the covers away. “Shall I go and let you sleep?”

She grabbed for his arm. “Oh, no you don’t.”

“Oh?”

“No. You’ll stretch out beside me and kiss me some more.”

Crow chuckled and kissed her neck again. “Your wish is my command.”

The phone next to her bed rang and she let out an irritated groan. “Hold that thought.” She picked up the phone. “Hello?”

“Shaye?”

“Hi, Jason.” Letting out a frustrated sigh, she flopped back onto the bed. “Kind of early on a Sunday morning, don’t you think?”

“I just got the message that you’re refusing to work the concert.”

Shaye scowled. “Oh, I don’t doubt that’s the message you received, Jason. However, it’s not the message I gave.
