Chapter 29

The Elmira Meeting Hall was alight with activity. Never had I imagined that our little coalition would turn into something resembling the United Nations, but here it was, full of delegates, scribes and emissaries. All from the five nations that were present, determined to have their own agenda fulfilled, regardless of whatever the emergency was. An alliance meeting was an alliance meeting. We would still follow all of the formalities of a regular meeting after the matter at hand was dealt with and voted upon.

The nature of the meeting was shrouded in mystery. Many looked to me with curiosity, as I stood at the podium. They tried to catch my eye, Harold, Michelle and even Yusuf, motioning for me to come join one of them for a quick side bar. But I wasn’t about to indulge them in their hopeless desire for more gossip. Rather, I’d let the seriousness of my presence at the podium convince everyone that real trouble was on its way.

“I call for order,” I announced, causing the entire room to shut up at once. All heads snapped away from one another and eyes trained on me. The silence was almost deafening. I glanced to the empty seat where Joanna would normally be, smiling at me or trying to distract me by making faces (during informal meetings, of course!).

The woman was still deep in her books as well as employing the strongest divinations she knew. Her work was far too important for her to serve as the usual intermediary between me and whoever I happened to offend last. I was on my own here.

“I second the call!” Harold shouted from the back. He was the only one in the group who looked rather pleased. An emergency security meeting was exactly what he had been waiting for. The man looked better than he had in quite some time. Whether he was over his ex or not, I didn’t know, but working as the security head of the coalition kept him busy and happy. And that, for the most part, kept him from getting into serious fights out of boredom.

“Then let this session commence,” I continued. “No doubt you are all wondering why I have summoned you. There is a great threat looming over Liora as a whole. I speak, of course, of these strange clouds that have formed at the edge of the continent. I am sure you all have your own theories and discoveries about such a thing. But I have gleaned the truth and wish to share what I know.”

Everyone exchanged glances, save for Yusuf. His arms were folded and his expression stern, intense. Did he know? He was a magician after all. And a brilliant scientist to boot. I shivered a little and continued.

“These clouds are a test. A Crisis Pillar designed by the gods themselves to push us to our limits. To cull the weak Champions and reward the strong. It is, in other words, an audit. An inspection of our abilities, powers and skills.
