Chapter 21

Chase was easier to talk to once he had admitted why he was underground. I don’t quite know why he confessed this truth to me, but I suspected that he had not been in the company of another Champion for a long, long time. Once that barrier had been broken, I began to learn a great deal about Mount Gimli and its inhabitants.

Trade was fairly nonexistent, due to Chase’s intense desire for self-sufficiency. As someone who understood how to manage data, he was quite an expert at using the Great Picture to the most of his abilities and had maximized his output of culture, food and science production within the first ten years of founding this city. There was always a need for things outside, of course, so he would sell off Primus Crystals in extremely small amounts, ensuring that they never flooded the market, undermining his ability to raise funds in times of crisis, a crisis that never came.

His entire culture was militarized. Every man, woman and child, dwarven refugees who had been through a long and terrible genocide from their ancestral enemies, were outfitted and armored from the moment they could walk. Everyone served in the army and was expected to fight at a moment’s notice.

This endeavor might have seemed like overkill, but one day those ancestral enemies, the ancient and cruel Murcad who wielded advanced magics and artifacts, returned. They arrived to the city to lay siege to the remnants of the dwarven tribe who had been pursued so relentlessly before. However, thanks to Chase’s leadership and preparations for this day, the tides were turned quickly and the Murcad forces were eradicated before they knew what hit them. Since that day, the dwarven folk declared Chase their king and he led them to a more prosperous life.

But prosperity had a cap, at least in the mountains. The Primus Crystals were limited in number and their light would not go far. The city had reached its peak long ago and the population was forced to slowly trickle out into the world, sometimes to trade or explore, but usually just to leave out of a sense of duty to the homelands. Mount Gimli could not support everyone. No amount of good management could make up for overpopulation.

I listened to these tales over the course of a few days, enjoying the amenities that the dwarves had. They had perfected beer, meat and cheeses, just as Chase had promised and I was given ample opportunities to feast with the other dwarves. They all spoke fondly of the man, but privately expressed their desire to do more with their empire. A common phrase amongst the people was “Bless the King and Emperor, but I’d rather…” followed by a list of ways they could do things better. All of these desired activities involved a second city. But the carving of the mountain had been such a monumental task, done by a people who had no other place to go, it could not be done again.
