CITY OF LIGHT

“If there is Light, bring a little darkness,”

-Unknown Grand Master of Assassins

In all honesty, there are very little of the twenty plus cities in the Kingdom I haven’t been to. Either on a mission for the Rebellion or simply passing by. (And maybe killing someone for fun whilst I’m there)

Breathing in the warm air with a strong smell of burned ozone and burned flesh, I listened to the gentle hum of the floating orbs of light around me.

As I stood there next to the rows of shops and stalls lining the street, I smiled as I looked at the beautiful array of street food in all different shapes and sizes, the clothes and all the other things these shops and stalls sold. I did like a particularly shiny gold necklace but as a female assassin, I find necklaces are risky.

Listening to the sounds of people chat, laugh and talk business around me, I studied each person in case they were a threat. That was an important waste of my time. After all, most of these people were just commoners in their dirty tunics and pieces of cloth out for their daily shopping. Others were out here for burning their money.

Admiring the people as they walked through the busy street, I remembered a time when I use to go into the high street of my village and shop. I used to love the little pastries my region use to make. They were amazing. Of course, that was a long, long time ago. I don’t even know if my village is alive now.

Probably not.

A pulsing of light drew my attention back to the sky. Of all the cities ruled by that foul Overlord, the City of Light definitely had character. All around me humming orbs of light lit up the City. It was beautiful.

But I would be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned about my mission. These orbs of light would make it more difficult to hide in the shadows and hunt my objective without being seen.

Casting my mind back to my last meeting with the Rebellion, they said they wanted me not to kill the King of Light who ruled as a Puppet Governor for the Overlord. Instead they wanted me to cause chaos.

Personally I don’t understand it. They know I’m a great assassin. They know I can kill anyone. (if I do say so myself) So why not get me to kill the King here? It would be a massive blow to the Overlord and his forces.

As I turned my attention back to these people from different classes, some with families, some with partners, others with dogs and baby dragons. (They were cute!) I knew I didn’t need to question my orders, but all these people were ruled over by a King who didn’t love them, who didn’t care about them and honestly would prefer them as slaves.

That’s how I first saw the City of Light, I was on a training mission years ago and I had to track a missing village.
