“A SECURITY STATION?” Tom responded to her query and Marg nodded.

“I saw revolving camera shots of every corridor and office and boardroom, and even the washrooms,” she reported.

Tom thought a moment. Then, he said, “Okay. Let me finish up here and I’ll go take a look.”

“Right,” she responded. “I’ll tell Mr. Pelletier to leave it unlocked. Or stay there till you arrive, if it’s self-locking.”

“Probably is,” Tom surmised. “Sensitive rooms usually are, these days.”

“In the meantime, I still need to find a washroom,” Marg remembered. She hurried back to the far corridor.

“Mr. Zavitske wants to check the computers,” she told the custodian. “He’ll need you to stay and get him in.”

Guy Pelletier nodded and went back to working the mop into the corners. Marg jogged quickly to the end of the corridor and around to the first door on the inner wall. To her relief, the knob turned easily to admit her. At once, wall sconces brightened the wallpapered little powder room fitted with a dressing table and a full-length mirror as well as the usual facilities. Marg set her rifle in the corner between the wall and the vanity and then availed herself of the john.

Relaxing at the release that had been long delayed, she surveyed the luxurious décor afforded persons considered superior to peasants like her. But her brows furrowed when she noted a curl of the flocked wallpaper in the near corner, just below the ceiling. Another lift of the showy covering caught her eye farther along the wall.

Curious that such shabby workmanship had been allowed to tarnish the chamber reserved for the beau monde, she finished her business and stood on the toilet lid to get a better look at the unseemly flaw. Closer inspection uncovered a small tab hidden by the bent paper. She grasped and pulled it.

“Ow!” Marg exclaimed when a section of ceiling swung down to hit her face. Grimacing more in annoyance than pain, she ducked to let the panel fall open to reveal itself as a hinged door. When teetering on tiptoe did not allow her to see into the hole, she jumped down and ran to the janitor’s cupboard. There, she found a ladder she figured to be of the size she needed and hefted it back to the lavatory. Inside, she manoeuvred the steps to brace the bottom against the outer wall and then scrambled up to peek into the opening.

“Uuuuughh!” she screamed low in her throat when she realized she needed a flashlight, as well. She hopped down and ran back to ask Guy, “Mr. Pelletier, do you have a flashlight?”

“Yeah,” he replied, and he crossed the hall to his cupboard to fetch one for her.

“Thanks,” she said breathlessly as she whirled to dash back to the washroom and climb the ladder once more. The moment she panned the space above, her eyes widened, her breath caught, and her heart skipped.

“Oh my God,” she whispered. She swallowed with difficulty. And she stepped back down on shaky legs to grab her rifle and march on autopilot to seek help.
