Lunch and Leads

“I thought it was a change of pace to meet here,” said Heather.

“Well, for you,” Amy said to the detectives. “We’re here quite a lot. But you’re usually stuck at the station. But with Chief Chet being so stressed about everything, it might be nice to get away from that for a bit.”

“You can say that again,” Peters agreed without thinking. He quickly covered his mouth as if he was embarrassed.

They were all seated at a table in Donut Delights, catching one another up on the case as they enjoyed some Cinnamon Roll Donuts as the dessert to their lunch.

“You can take the chief some donuts when you go back to the station,” said Heather. “But first tell us about your morning’s investigation.”

“We searched Shaun’s house,” said Ryan.

“And did you find anything incriminating?” asked Amy.

“Well, there were a lot more of the knives with that specific handle,” said Peters. “But that’s no surprise. We knew he had a collection from the beginning. We did find one knife that was an exact match to the one that was used as the murder weapon. Same size and shape. That just further proves that it was one of his knives.”

“What about the boots?” asked Heather. “We know that he wore the same size as the boot prints found by the back door. Did you find boots that matched in his house?”

“We didn’t find the boots, but we did find a box,” said Ryan. “There was a shoebox in the house that was for size thirteen boots. The shoe company makes boots that would be a match to the print we found.”

“But you didn’t find the actual boots?” asked Heather.

“No,” said Ryan. “We think he must have ditched them after committing the crime. There might have been blood on them. But he forgot to get rid of the shoebox in his house.”

“Why did he keep the box?” asked Amy. “Were they brand new?”

“These boots are a model that has been popular for a few years,” said Peters.

“He was using the box to hold old receipts,” Ryan said.

Heather thought about this, trying to determine if it held any meaning. Could Shaun just have forgotten to get rid of the shoebox after destroying boots that had been at a murder scene?

“What about your investigation?” asked Ryan. “Have you found any other clues that don’t lead to Shaun as the killer?”

“Not exactly,” said Amy.

“We’d like you to confirm that Sheila’s new boyfriend, Charlie Johnson, was indeed out of town on a business trip,” said Heather. “He said he took the red-eye in this morning.”

“That should be easy to check,” said Ryan.

“Next, we plan on looking into where she worked,” said Heather. “Charlie mentioned that she might have had trouble with a co-worker.”

“Speaking of,” Amy muttered and gestured toward who was approaching.

Digby walked up to the table, eyeing the detectives warily this time.

“Would anyone like more coffee?” he asked.

“That’s really why you came over?” asked Amy. “You didn’t want to overhear what we were talking about
