31 GENERAL POSING

USE LIGHT TO DIMINISH PERCEIVED FLAWS

When you are posing your subject, there are many factors to consider. First, you want to look at your subject and determine, based on their features, if there are certain things you want to emphasize or hide with the lighting pattern you choose. For example, if your client has a scar or blemish you don’t want seen, you are going to want to light that area versus trying to hide it in the shadow area. The reason for this is that if you cast the light across something, it creates its own shadow, so by putting something you don’t want seen on the shadow side of the face it will create its own shadow and become even more prominent. However, if you light that feature it will flatten it out and although it is still visible, it will be less prominent. This also puts it in a more consistent lighting area, which makes for easier retouching versus an area where there is a transition of darkness in shadow.
