Following her move to America, Ekberg soon became a major pin-up. Russ Meyer was often quoted as saying she was the most beautiful woman he had ever photographed and that “her 40D bustline was the most ample in A list Hollywood history”!

Although Ekberg was married to Van Nutter between 1963 and 1975, her love life became fodder for the international tabloids. She was rumoured to have had affairs with many high-profile stars, including Frank Sinatra, with whom she co-starred in the 1963 comedy 4 for Texas alongside Dean Martin and Ursula Andress. Always outspoken and seemingly the epitome of the independent woman, Ekberg was branded a diva. Whilst this made her exploits popular with the international media, she never found another role equal to that of Sylvia in La Dolce Vita. Throughout the Sixties, she alternated between European films and Hollywood productions. She was the female lead opposite Tony Randall in the 1965 Hercule Poirot mystery The Alphabet Murders and reunited with Jerry Lewis for the sci-fi comedy Way… Way Out (1966), a film criticised on release for its blatant sexual content which was considered inappropriate for Lewis’ core family audience. Following an appearance in Vittoria De Sica’s 1967 all-star comedy Wom an Times Seven, Ekberg almost entirely confined her appearances to European films.

Ekberg long ago expressed a desire to have children, but it remained an unfulfilled wish. She seems to have ambiguous feelings about her native Sweden. Published reports say she thinks her talents have never been sufficiently appreciated there, although she does return periodically and has publicly stated that she intends to be buried on Swedish soil. Ekberg has been inactive on the big screen since the late 1990s, but in 2010 returned to Rome to celebrate the 50th anniversary of La Dolce Vita. As in decades past, Ekberg was a media sensation and seemed to relish being back in the spotlight. Even after all those years, the lady still knew how to draw a crowd.
