Chapter Fifteen

A Lager for a Drunk

I slump in my seat and release a heavy sigh as he comes around to the driver’s side. I feel my hands shaking and hug myself to hide them. He peals out of the driveway and speeds along the road. Maybe he’s not as calm as I thought? His knuckles are white against the steering wheel and I can hear his grip tightening against the leather. I feel Aaron’s eyes on me and look up slightly from between my lashes.

“Are you alright?” He asks.

“I-I’m fine.” I force a smile.

He frowns. “You’re not fine. You’re shaking.” He takes my hand from beneath my arm and holds it between us. “Don’t take anything he said to heart. He doesn’t even know you and he’s always like that.”

“He can tell I’m poor and I don’t have a future,” I mumble. Something flickers in his expression. Anger, maybe? He takes his hand away from mine to dig the cigarettes out of his pocket.

“You really should…” I bite my tongue to stop myself. “Sorry.”

His eyebrow twitches up at me.

I look away out my window. “You don’t need another lecture from the likes of me.”

His expression darkens. “The likes of you? You don’t seriously agree with him, do you?”

I shrug. He slams on his breaks so hard my seatbelt digs into my shoulder. He fumbles around for his lighter. His face is shining red in what I think is fury with a vein throbbing in his neck.

“Um, why are you mad?” I ask cautiously.

He blows the smoke out the window before glaring back at me. “You! You’re making me mad!”

I shrink back at his harsh tone. “Sorry.”

He sucks on his cigarette before tossing it out the window. He unbuckles himself and suddenly reaches over me.

My eyes widen. “What are you doing?”

My seat falls back and he hits the button for my seatbelt. He straddles my lap and hovers above me.

I narrow my eyes. “I swear to god, if you kiss me again…”

He grins. “There you are. So, you have enough self respect to refuse me, but a few unfounded words from an arsehole gets you all shaken up?”

I look away from him. “He’s not wrong though. I have nothing going for me.”

“Well then, we might as well get to work on getting you knocked up.” He lowers his body against mine. The hard smell of nicotine clings to his hair and shirt.

My head snaps back to him and my eyes widen. “Aaron!” I push both hands against his chest. He laughs at me and I glare up. “You’re so not cute!”

His hand moves to my head as he strokes my hair gently. His expression is so gentle as he looks at me that I forget to breathe.

“I don’t care what the old man says, he’s a blowhard anyway, but I wish you wouldn’t talk about yourself this way.”

My mouth loosens into a soft smile. “Is that why you were mad?”

“I was mad because my git of a father made you feel bad.
