56. The Perfect Newbie
There are so very many things that new EMTs do which annoy the more experienced EMTs. In fact you can see my list of annoying newbie traits in Chapter 76. Pretty much every single new person, through no fault of their own, does these things when they start out, unless they have previous EMS experience (sometimes even then) or unless they are Superman.
I was partners with this guy, Superman, on his second day of working solo (without a preceptor). I expected him to be nervous or on the opposite end, a condescending know-it-all. He had a jock look to him, so I admit I wasn’t expecting much from him.
Superman first surprised me with his calm, yet not arrogant attitude. He was more than receptive to my offer of answering any questions he might have had, but he didn’t have nearly any. It was clear that Superman, despite his offensive lineman appearance, was very intelligent.
When I learned more about his background I found out that we had a lot in common. We both graduated from college with B.S.es and both tried unsuccessfully to get into medical school. It was absolutely refreshing to share an ambulance with someone who didn’t give me a blank face when I mentioned biochemistry or who knew what the MCAT is and the simple fact that you CANNOT PASS THE MCAT. (Nor can you fail it, so that’s cool.)
Superman was a quick learner and never needed you to repeat something or explain it. The only newbie mishap wasn’t even his fault. We were using a motorized stretcher and when he pushed the button to lift the stretcher, a stretcher strap which was caught underneath a wheel, broke in twain. He was so amusedly embarrassed at this “mistake” and I was grateful for it, because perfect is really found in the imperfections.
