Chapter Seventeen

Daisy

There was nothing like being back home in Buttercup Lake. The week I’d been away had turned the town into a winter wonderland.

All the little storefronts had their Christmas decorations out, and my go-to coffee shop had brought back my favorite holiday drink called the Rudolph, which was white chocolate, cinnamon, and three shots of espresso with a dollop of gingerbread cold foam with a cherry on top.

It made up for the weather dropping to sixteen degrees this morning. All I had to do was remind myself that Madison’s balmy temp of twenty-two didn’t have a drink like this that could compete.

Even after all that goodness and loving being back here, I had to come to the stark realization that I missed Purrlock and Hunter.

Especially Hunter.

And with the text he’d sent me, it was safe to say he missed me too.

Which was good and confusing, a sort of confusing good that left open possibilities for our continued friendship.

But it left me wanting to start doing air quotes around friendship.

The more I thought about it and relived being in his arms, I knew there was nothing casual about what was happening.

Even his kisses worked magic on me, and my friends didn’t experience things like that. They didn’t walk away, barely able to stay upright with lips tingling for hours after, mind foggy, and having heart palpitations.

I had to admit to myself that I was falling for Hunter Knox. That was the first step.

I didn’t know what the second step might be, but at least I had step number one figured out.

After he wrote me that text, I quickly wrote back that I’d have a roast waiting for him. I never heard back, but I assumed he got busy with the bar.

My only goal for the day was to stay awake and not become delirious from the lack of sleep I’d had from making fudge all night.

As I stepped inside the cozy antique store, the smell of sweet cider drifted around me, and I immediately spotted Maya. She wandered over with a big grin. “How are you this fine day?”

I chuckled, loosening my scarf. “Good, but you seem awfully chipper.”

“I just found out some huge news.” She grinned from ear to ear.

My brows quirked. “What’s that?”

“My sister is pregnant again.”

“Grace? Is that possible? Didn’t she just have her little girl?”

She snickered. “That’s what Jackson said, too.”

I smiled, knowing how much Jackson loved his wife. My cousin had met his soul mate. No doubt about it.

“But I know Grace wanted to tell you herself, so act surprised.”

I chuckled and nodded. “Is Izzy ecstatic?”

Grace’s teenage daughter, Izzy, from Grace’s first marriage, absolutely loved being a big sister for the most part.

“I think it makes her relieved to be going to college in a couple of years.” She smiled. “But I think she’s secretly excited, just showing it how some teenagers do.” She wandered over to the counter where a carafe sat and poured herself some hot cider. “So, I’m just filling in while Grace gets some rest.
