CHAPTER FOUR – All’s well that ends well

IN SPITE OF THE SIX THIRTY SUNRISE on the coast, the children slept late next morning. When they awoke, the first thing Poppy did was to check whether her father had come home, but he hadn’t.

She went back to the bedroom to find Charlie and Suze attacking the Christmas sacks at the end of their beds. They were pulling presents out, ripping the paper off and piling them up with barely a glance at the gifts.

“Charlie! Suze! You know you’re only allowed to open one now. The rest are for when we’re all together round the tree. Anyway, I think you should save some for when Daddy comes back,” said Poppy in her best big-sister voice.

But Charlie and Suze wouldn’t stop opening the presents. Poppy gave up. She had more important things to think about. She had to check on Amina and the baby. And horror of horrors, she had to try and cook the huge turkey. It had to be cooked because it would go off if it was kept another day.

On her way to see Amina and take her some breakfast, Poppy tried the phone but it was still out of order. Amina said she would stay in bed for the day and rest. She was glad to have such an opportunity, she said.

Back in the house, Poppy opened the fridge to look at the turkey. She didn’t know where to start such an intimidating task.

“Suze,” she called out. “Come and help me get this turkey out of the fridge. It’s too heavy for me on my own.”

Suze came running up, still in her pajamas.

“If we take hold of one side each, perhaps we can lift it onto the counter.”

The sisters took hold of the tray and carefully began to carry the turkey across the kitchen.

“Poppy, it’s much too heavy. I’m going to drop it.”

“Don’t make such a fuss, Suze. We’re nearly there,” answered Poppy.

Cola came rushing into the kitchen. She ran straight through Suze’s legs knocking her off balance and down went the turkey with a dull thud. Suze fell down, too. Poppy was left holding one end of the tray. Things couldn’t get worse.

In ran Flicky and Lobo to see what they were missing. A turkey! On the floor! But Poppy was too quick for them. She kicked the fowl into the corner of the kitchen and stood guard.

“Get up, Suze. Charlie! Charlie!” she called at the top of her voice. “Get these dogs under control.”

Suze and Charlie soon cleared the dogs out of the kitchen. Poppy thanked her father silently for all the hours spent at dog training classes. She was left on her own to size up the turkey project. She decided it was just too much for them all. They would have to abandon the idea of turkey for Christmas lunch and settle for something she could cook. Not a great choice. Baked beans or scrambled eggs. Eggs it would have to be.

She called Charlie and Suze back to help her.
