Chapter Eleven
Lacie
* * *
I wake and check my phone. Itâs a little before seven, and I feel well rested. I sit up and stretch my arms toward the ceiling. Itâs Christmas Eve, and my first holiday with Collins. Even more fun, itâs going to start snowing soon.
I get dressed and go to the bathroom to brush my teeth and do my makeup. Itâs nice not having to fight Liam for the bathroom. This early in the morning, heâs either sound asleep or hunting.
I pull half of my hair back in a barrette and practically skip toward the living room. Christmas Eve is my favorite day. Something about the anticipation of Christmas morning and the candlelight service at church makes it all so magical. For a brief time, Wisteria is less Hart of Dixie and more Hallmark. The way most outsiders romanticize a small town.
Speaking of Hallmark, Mama is curled up on the couch with the John Deere blanket, dabbing the corners of her eyes. As soon as I spot Rob Lowe on the TV, I know whatâs up. I drop my shoulders and step up behind the couch. âMama, I told you not to watch The Christmas Shoes. You canât handle it.â
Mama sniffles and turns to face me. âBut itâs just so good, sweetie.â
âSo are Oreos, but if we ate those as much as you watch this movie each year, weâd all be borrowing pants from Earl Ed.â
Mama twists back around and pauses the TV. âI guess youâre right. Iâll put in Elf.â She gets up and puts the movie in the DVD player, then curls back under her blanket.
A giddy laugh escapes me. Elf is my favorite Christmas movie. After watching it for the first time as a little girl, I tried to use syrup whenever we ate spaghetti. Then Daddy let me one time when Mama was gone on a church trip. That was all it took for me to realize that recipe was better suited for the North Pole. But Daddy made me eat the whole plate just to get it out of my system. To this day, I donât eat spaghetti.
I circle the couch and sit by Mama. Not long after the opening credits finish, we hear a faint beep.
âRobin, the oven,â Daddy yells from the kitchen. We no longer trust him to check the oven thanks to the biscuit disaster of 2012.
Mama tosses the blanket over to me and hurries to the kitchen. I lie back against the cushions and watch as Elf discovers heâs really human.
âLacie, we have monkey bread.â
That announcement is all it takes for me to forget about Elf and head toward the kitchen. I pour a glass of milk, then smell something woodsy behind me. Not good woodsy like cologne, but the kind of woodsy that lets you know someoneâs been camping or riding four-wheelers way too long. I turn to see Liam standing behind me.
âCan you pour me a glass?â
I want to put the milk back and tell him to take a shower, but itâs Christmas, so I nod.
