Chapter Fifteen
Zero chased Roman through the front door. Linda hoped her dog would be able to stop him without getting hurtâor worse, killed in the process. It was a fear she carried with her constantly. It was the price of having a canine working in such dangerous situations. Zero ran down the porch. Linda trotted behind, watching for anyone coming up on her left or right side as she raced into the front yard. She held the gun, ready to shoot if required.
As Roman had lost his sidekick and his hostage, Linda prepared for any desperate action taken by a person whose plan was falling apart. He climbed inside Joeâs Jeep, opening the back door from the front seat. Zero jumped inside. As soon as he was inside, Roman fled the front seat and slammed the back door to close Zero inside. Zero barked and scratched frantically at the door. Now it was only Linda and Roman. He raced toward the back of the house where the snowmobile was parked. She was too far away to get a good shot. Instead, she sprinted after him. He swerved away from the snowmobile by the back door, pushing through the bushes toward Asterâs location. Linda tried to cut him off. But it was too late. Within seconds, he had his arm around Asterâs neck and a gun pointed to her temple.
Linda aimed her weapon at him. âI canât let you leave here with her.â
Aster struggled until Roman struck the grip of the gun over her ear. She cried out in pain as her fight fizzled out.
Roman called back to Linda. âYou canât stop me. Did you really think sheâd be safe out here alone? I saw your arrival out the window. Leaving her isolated made her the perfect backup plan. And here we are.â
She pointed the gun at him. He was right: she couldnât be sure she wouldnât hit Aster if she took a shot. All he had to do was shift an inch, and Aster could die by Lindaâs bullet. She froze, terror caught in her throat, yet she continued to aim the gun.
âIâm not leaving town until I have whatâs mine. We can make this easy or far more bloody. Itâs up to you.â
âWhat do you want? I can help get it for youâjust let her go. Sheâs got nothing to do with this and will only increase the number of people wanting you behind bars.â
âFirst, I want my coat back.â He pointed the gun toward Linda.
âSend her over here and itâs yours.â
âNot a chance.â
âThen youâll freeze.â She wouldnât back down, because as soon as he had the coat, he could hurt Aster.
âI donât think so. I can handle cold weather. Letâs see if she can.â The menace in his voice had nothing to do with the gun in his hand and everything to do with a complete disregard for Asterâs life. Linda had been to hostage-situation training, but she was by no means an expert in the field.
She needed to understand what he wanted.
