Chapter 21

I’m not taking you to the movies.

So where exactly were we going?

Russell and I walked together, but he was the one leading us. We followed the edge of the front lawn. I saw the peaked roof of Xavier Hall up ahead, which was where the campus ended and the woods began.

“The woods,” I murmured.

Russell turned toward me.

“I followed you one day,” I admitted. “I watched you take off your clothes and disappear into the shadows right over there.”

“I know,” Russell said.

I felt my eyes widen in shock.

Russell looked amused. “You weren’t as quiet as you think you were,” he said.

“But I was about ten feet behind you!” I said.

Russell touched his ears. “Shifters have keener senses than regular humans,” he said. Then, he laughed.

I laughed, too. I couldn’t help myself. “So are you taking me into the woods?” I said.

“Yes,” Russell said. His smile faded.

I suppressed a shiver as I recalled that day. I’d followed him to the edge of the woods. He’d slipped into the trees, leaving behind a pile of his clothes. I realized now that he’d gone into the wilderness to shift.

We were going to the same woods. Was Russell going to shift for me?

He didn’t say anything else as we walked past Xavier Hall. The sidewalk ended, and soon we were walking on grass and hard, packed earth. I inhaled the fresh scent of pine. The air turned cold the moment we plunged under the shadow of the trees.

My eyes strained against the darkness. Russell’s hand was warm inside of my cold one. I was tempted to ask what he had planned, but I trusted him.

Then, I saw a glimmer of light up ahead.

“What’s that?” I said.

Russell squeezed my hand encouragingly.

Twigs and dry needles cracked under my shoes. The trees began to thin around us. I kept my eyes trained on the dancing, golden light.

“Candles?” I said. My hand dropped out of Russell’s fingers.

I was looking at an antique dinner table in the middle of the woods. Its surface was covered in dozens of white candles. There were short fat ones, long tapers, and tiny, creamy votives flickering in the darkness.

I turned to Russell. “You planned this?”

“I did,” he said. The light played off of his smooth face.

“It’s beautiful.”

His eyes crinkled as he smiled.

I walked toward the table. There was an aura of warmth around it from all the tiny little flames. I wrapped my arms around myself, enjoying its warmth.

“How did you get all this stuff out here?” I said.

“It took a while,” Russell said from behind me. “I came out here when I had time. Between classes, before work, after work. It took a few days to collect everything and move it.”

So that was why he hadn’t asked me out right away. It had taken him days to get everything ready.

Suddenly, I started thinking about my date with Damon. As Russell labored to collect his candles and move this heavy table, I’d been in a steaming hot tub, kissing the alpha bear.

I started shivering

“Cold?” Russell said.
