Summer

I walked to the front of the class and dropped my quiz on the pile with the rest as I looked at him. “A quiz? Is this some sort of payback?”

“Payback? Summer, I have a class to teach, this isn’t about you, or us.” Chase whispered. “Besides, I’m sure you did just fine.”

“Well, I just got an earful from Alyssa. She’s freaking out, as is the rest of–”

“Summer, she’ll be fine. You’ll be fine. Will we be–”

A line of students made their way to the desk, dropping off their quizzes, cutting short our conversation, but I knew what he was going to ask and I didn’t know the answer. Chase quickly stood up and made an announcement to the class before the remainder of the students wrapped up. “A quick reminder, I need to see the interns after class.”

All I could do was stand and stare at him. His electric green eyes piercing my skin and sending electricity through my body. I loved the way he looked at me, the way it felt to be desired like that. I looked back over at Alyssa who was gathering up her things and making her way to the front of the classroom.

“That sucked and I definitely fucked that up.” Alyssa snarled with a half smile as she dropped her quiz off onto the stack of others, briefly catching a glimpse of Chase. “Have fun.” She whispered as she turned to leave, giving me a little jab in the side. If she only knew.

The handful of remaining interns gathered around Chase’s desk as he gave instructions. “Since you all have made it this far, I’d like to meet with each and every one of you. Get to know you better,” Chase said.

I looked down at the floor, tracing the carpet with my shoe. He already knew some of us—at least one of us—more than well.

“I’d like to hold a little get together with you and your mentors. I’m thinking in a couple of weeks—any objections?”

No one had any objections, of course. I could see some of the girls out of the corner of my eye who were practically drooling for a chance to get to know him better. I looked up, finding Chase staring at me.

“Professor Kerns?” I said his name timidly, but didn’t back down as my eyes met his. “I know you said you weren’t planning on hiring anyone else for part of the program, but since someone left the program…”

“I won’t be having another intern to fill her place, no. That’s not part of the program; we’re already a few weeks in, and you have all been working very hard to keep your positions. I don’t feel it would be fair to everyone else if I opened up a position this late in the game.”

I didn’t protest as everyone’s eyes turned to me, just daring me to provide a rebuttal to Chase’s powerful commands.

“Great,” Chase continued, “If there are no more questions, I’d ask you to check your email for a date about the meet and greet.
