Chapter Nineteen

Devin nestled her face into Karissa’s hair and pushed against her warm body. Every time she’d tried to shift in the night but had been unable to thanks to the damn leg, Karissa had woken, stroked her stomach or arm, and sent her back to sleep. Waking with Ris cuddled by her side, her long hair swept in every direction, her breathing so soft and sweet, made Devin’s heart ache. She hadn’t had this in so long, and telling Karissa the story about her past had been painful but strangely cathartic too. This morning she felt like she wanted to burst into some cheesy song about happy birds and flowing rivers. Karissa hadn’t been sleeping well because Devin hadn’t been sleeping well, and she was incredibly grateful she’d still chosen to stay in the tent with Devin rather than pitch one of her own so she could actually get some rest.

Devin closed her eyes, willing herself to drop back to sleep, and then opened them again. Her heart began to race.

“Ris, baby, wake up.” She swept the hair from her face and squeezed her shoulder.

“Hmm? Are you okay?” She didn’t open her eyes but began that rhythmic stroking on Devin’s stomach like she had throughout the night.

“Ris, someone’s coming. Listen.”

Karissa’s eyes opened wide, and she sat up.

The sharp thudding sound of big trucks was unmistakable. It was also getting closer.

Karissa scrambled to her knees, quickly pulled on her clothes and shoes, and helped Devin do the same. Neither spoke, and Devin knew they were both wondering what kind of people were headed their way. In the way that had become almost choreographed, Karissa helped Devin out of the tent, gave her the staff, and stood beside her.

“Do we move closer to the road?”

Devin thought about it. If help was nearby, they needed to snatch at it. If it wasn’t Zeke, they’d have to make a decision—take the help and see if they could track him down and risk missing him altogether, or wait for him and potentially miss their only chance of rescue. It would be a hell of a choice to have to make. And if the trucks coming were bad guys, putting themselves directly in their path seemed like a stupid idea. But if they didn’t and help passed them by because they were hiding…

“Let’s go.” Karissa pulled Devin’s arm over her shoulder. “You’re overthinking. That’s my job.”

Devin hobbled along beside her. She’d never been indecisive, but being injured seemed to make her more hesitant. She couldn’t protect Karissa from danger. This is why I don’t get involved. It’s too damn messy. They made it to the road and stood on the side in plain sight. The trucks were loud now, their chugging echoing against the trees around them. They waited, watching, and she held Karissa tightly against her. She could feel the tension in Karissa’s back, could see it in the frown lines in her forehead.

“Hey, it’s going to be okay. Nothing will happen to you. I promise.
